The late President JFK authored a book entitled “Profiles in Courage”. He wrote it to pay tribute to past political leaders of our country who stood up for their beliefs despite going against the norms of the day despite political pressure from even those in their own party as well as knowing good and well that they might suffer ridicule and personal loss for doing so.
Some recent event here in the US of late speak to me regarding the courage that many have shown in the face of ridicule, personal loss even of life and income, as well as retribution.
Most certainly for me, Jack Smith, Former Attorney and Special Councel for the United States Department of Justice, has demonstrated the kind of courage our former President spoke of especially during his testimony this past week to Congress.
He has been threatened as well as denigrated and demonized yet he has stood firm in his commitment to justice, truth and the upholding of the law.
There are certainly others who, for me, demonstrate the kind of courage JFK spoke to. They come in all forms.
They are those who show up in the streets to peacefully protest wrongs despite the cold and possible physical harm, they are the politicians who, despite pressure from the president stand up for what is right and just, other party leaders and constituents stood up for the Epstein survivors or who remind military personnel of their oath to refuse unlawful orders.
They are also the ones who stand up to superiors in their organizations who try to get them to cheat customers or commit crimes for the sake of the organization even though they know, as I found out myself that it could cost them their job and livelihood.
Theye are also the ones who stand up to bullies or put their life on the line to save another person.
I could go on and on but by now you should get my point. They are special children of God who deserve our love and respect.
Sadly, there are way too many people who instead of demonstrating courage during difficult times instead demonstrate cowardice.
They are the politicians and those in power who, despite knowing better, will chose to instead follow an unlawful order at the direction of the President which causes harm to others even their own constituents.
They are the business leaders and heads of University’s who bend the knee to the leader so as not to offend that leader who has threatened to take away funding or retaliate against them which might cost them income or position.
As such, we must then ask ourselves the question, when it comes our time to choose between doing what is right and showing courage despite the cost, which will we be remembered for, courage or cowardice? History and our Almighty Father will remember.
I hope for the sake of our future as a country and society it will be the former.
Thanks for checking in this week.
